It's not that far if you're motivated to go I just put on a podcast and I'm there pretty quick. I do not like commuting, and so I chose to live in Vicksburg instead of Jackson area. There has been a few people in my department that have gotten under my skin about some of the new mandates with just completely unfounded comments, but if there wasn't all the COVID stuff going on it would be fine. It won't be so bad since you lived in Huntsville and you're used to the southern culture. BUT it has been a very welcoming experience working there. There isn't a music scene as I'd like it, and tbh most of the restaurants are just okay. I'm from Houston, lived in some cities in LA for a long time too. Also have many great connections to realtors, doctors, etc. If you need anyone to help show you around just PM me and I’ll be happy to help. Kids interested in sports play for Warren Central’s teams so they don’t even have to give up sports and activities to attend. RCEC is small and has a fantastic faculty. Those credits also transfer to all state schools to apply to a 4-year degree. Aloysius are probably the best options although for high school kids, River City Early College is also great because your kids can get an associate’s degree while in high school. Our home prices are much cheaper than in Clinton and Jackson. I have a ton of friends who work there and it’s a great place for meeting people of all kinds so you shouldn’t have any problems finding folks with all sorts of interests here.Īnd you do not have to live in Jackson or Clinton to commute. You’ll find that the people at ERDC are very diverse and from all over the country and the world. If you're ever in town, let me know and I'll buy you some beers at Cottonwood. For what it's worth, I'm glad I moved here instead of commuting from Jackson or Clinton. At least I've had time to work on my hobbies. I don't think I'll spend the rest of my life here, but I like the work I do, so it hasn't been completely miserable. Nothing like the accepting, life-long friends I've made in other cities who would give you whatever they have. They are of course very polite, but the southern hospitality comes off very shallow and fake to me. To the locals, I'll never be one of them. We try to stick together and have fun, but there's just not much to do, and a lot of people seem to treat it as a temporary stopping point in their careers. There is a population of educated transplants working at ERDC. It has some small-town charm, a couple okay bars, the military park is nice, no traffic, and the Strand is a gem. From the north, very liberal, but I've enjoyed living in fun southern cities for undergrad and grad school (Nashville, Austin, New Orleans). I'm a single guy (34) living in Vicksburg for the last 5 years.
